Water Bottle Cradle
How to make your own

From time to time, rats become poorly. At these times, Deb and I especially worry about their access to water. With this in mind, I wanted to tell you how to make a water bottle cradle. It is cheap and simple, and with the new (and less brittle) standard tank coming more common, the new tank and water bottle cradle are useful when they stay at the vets or are convalescing.

You will need:
  • Small drinking bottle (I prefer the red topped mouse drinking bottles made by Classic pet products and sold by the MRC shop)
  • Garden wire, usually coated in green plastic. Mine is usually 2mm, but anything bendy is fine.
  • Something to snip the wire with
  • About five minutes

  • How to make the cradle:

  • 1. Cut a 33cm (13") length of wire
  • 2. Take the spout off the bottle. Bend the wire around the bottleneck so it forms a loop. Continue to bend the wire until the ends run parallel.

  • Tip: Keep the wire as close to the shoulder of the bottle as possible.
  • 3. Without taking off the wire, replace the spout. Bend each of the parallel legs to a right angle so the run up the side of the bottle.
  • 4. In line with the end of the bottle, bend each leg to form a hook.
  • This is extremely handy for oldies, kittens, convalescing rats, and such like who may not reach a bottle, especially in a deep sided cage. However, it may be worth pointing out that an active rat who enjoys chewing could, theoretically, wreck a bottle in minutes although it's never happened to us (yet).
